1. What is AI?
A.I.: Artificial Intelligence - The field of developing computers and robots that are capable of behaving in ways that both mimic and go beyond human capabilities. Through A.I., a computer system uses math and logic to simulate the reasoning that people use to learn from new information and make decisions. A.I.-enabled programs can analyze and contextualize data to provide information or automatically trigger actions without human interference. AI is a general term that includes specific techniques of "machine learning,” “natural language processing” and “generative artificial intelligence.” You can find definitions through search. Here’s one from Encyclopedia Britannica.
2. How will AI use my data? / What will AI do with my data?
Omada is a healthcare provider, and our use of your data is regulated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, (HIPAA) and the privacy and security rules of that law. We do not share personal information with developers of large language models for their improvement of their own models or otherwise for their own purposes. Omada also never sells or discloses data about you to third parties for their use. Below is generally how we use your data with AI that we build or manage.
-
- We use AI to summarize how certain aspects of your health are going and to make these summaries available to your care team.
- In addition, when you engage with AI features, those features use your data to provide you with appropriate outputs, like nutrition advice. You may be offered an opportunity to interact with AI features that we build. While you can always decline that interaction, that may also mean you forgo some benefits of our program features. We will always tell you when you are directly interacting with a feature powered by generative AI.
- We also use AI to better understand how you are using the Omada program, so we can make it meaningful for you and to improve those features generally. We develop our own AI capabilities that help us personalize our program for your goals. Just like a hospital or health system may review data from its patient population to monitor its programs or improve them, Omada may also use data from our members to better understand how our healthcare programs perform, as part of our health care operations. When we develop AI capabilities, we do so to improve our programs and, we hope, your health. When we use data from you this way, we minimize any included identifiable information, and where possible, leverage data at the population level. When we use data this way, we do so using our internal staff or vendors that serve as our HIPAA business associates, who are not allowed to use your data for other purposes.
3. How Is Omada Using AI?
Omada is using AI in several different ways. We are using AI to create tools for our care team that allow them to deliver more personalized care, including summaries of your health inputs. We’re also utilizing AI to allow members to actively participate and direct their own journey, such as our personalized pathways feature. In addition, we have developed AI-powered features, including generative AI features, to help enhance member education around food and nutrition, and allow members to better set and achieve their goals.
4. Why is AI needed?
AI can improve efficiency for our care teams, leaving them with more time to work on important tasks with our members. AI also enables us to offer some educational resources to you 24/7, even if our care teams are not available in real time. AI can also help us understand more efficiently what types of changes to our programs would be beneficial to or attractive for you. AI can also generate non-clinical information quickly and more efficiently for you, such as recipe recommendations or food swaps.
5. How will AI impact my privacy and security?
We design our AI features just as we do our other features, consistent with our privacy and security program. As discussed above, any time we use data from you in developing or delivering AI, we do so in compliance with HIPAA and all other legal obligations. And, Omada doesn’t sell or disclose health information about you to developers of AI for their own purposes.
6. Can I opt out of AI?
If a member wishes to opt out of using a conversational AI agent, we are committed to respecting their preferences while balancing the need to maintain the effectiveness and integrity of our program. We understand that some members may prefer not to engage with conversational AI features within our program, and members have the option to not engage with these features.
Of course, Omada’s programs also have some underlying components that use AI to streamline either the member or care team experience. For example, Omada uses AI to help evaluate whether certain goals have been completed based on meal tracker activity. Features like these will be automatically on for members without an option to opt-out.
We are committed to continually evaluating both member and customer feedback to inform the evolution of our program as we strive to meet the needs and expectations of all members.
7. Is AI dangerous?
We thoughtfully design our AI features at Omada with input from our Clinical Team and other relevant subject matter experts to help meet our clinical standards for safety and quality and mitigate any safety risks.
8. How will I know if I’m speaking with AI versus a real person?
When you are using a feature that is interactive and responds to you like a human, we will tell you if it is an AI feature, and not a human.
9. What does OmadaSpark Know about me?
OmadaSpark takes into account the Omada program you are in (Prevention, Diabetes, Hypertension, etc.), dietary preferences, allergies, and age, as well as any information that you share directly with OmadaSpark.
10. What does the coach see, I saw this is shared with my care team.
The chat transcripts are made available to our coaches so they're able to reference them if they would find it helpful in supporting you on your journey.
